ABOUT

CMIT WOMENS LACROSSE

In the Winter of 2019, CMIT's lacrosse program began with a humble dream. With only a handful of girls who had the curiosity to learn lacrosse, the shared dream started to take shape. A dream of bringing an entirely new opportunity for every girl at CMIT to start fresh and more importantly start together.

The following Spring, after months of heavy campaigning and recruiting, CMIT Lacrosse held their inaugural meeting as a new club. Similar to any new club, we were not without challenges. Our greatest challenge came immediately after our first club practice when we received news that our small club had suddenly become a competitive varsity team with our first game only a few days away. Bringing lacrosse into a community with no real youth lacrosse infrastructure was a battle in itself, but bringing together girls from different walks of life who never met each other and transforming them into a competitive unified team seemed almost "impossible".

Following the surprise announcement, the program's coach asked the club members one simple question, "Do you still want to do this?". He gave the club members the night to sleep on the idea, reassuring them that there was no shame stepping down. Being a competitive varsity team in their first year of learning lacrosse was a commitment many of them were not expected to make so soon. However, the following day at their first varsity practice, every single player returned. By returning to each other and committing to face the challenge head-on as a team, "impossible" began to seem more and more possible.

Thanks to the handful of girls who took that first leap of faith to go from being a club to a varsity team, the dream of bringing an entirely new opportunity for every girl at CMIT to start fresh and start together lives on. Today, there exists not only a varsity team but a middle school club team at CMIT Academy with many of our girls beginning their lacrosse careers through our program. CMIT Academy North Lacrosse Program hopes to spread the game to their sister schools and surrounding elementary schools with hopes of strengthening the infrastructure of the women's game in the community.
